Every month we pick an outstanding member from our Seniors for Seniors team to be our Employee of the Month. We chose Zora Menhartova to be our May Employee of the Month because of her thoughtfulness to her clients and her passion for senior care.
We asked Zora about her experience being a Senior Companion for Seniors for Seniors. Here is what she had to share:
1. How did you hear about Seniors for Seniors and why did you decide to join the company?
I was looking for a job on Kijiji in the medical field and an ad for Seniors for Seniors came to my attention. It looked like a very interesting and flexible job so I applied. And now here I am, working for Seniors for Seniors. I enjoy my work with this organization. Helping seniors fulfil their days and bring a little joy and light to their routine gives me great satisfaction.
2. What is your favourite companion/caregiver experience or story?
Once I had a female client who I visited seven days a week. I learned a lot about her family and she learned a lot about mine. She didn't hesitate to tell me if she didn't like my haircut or dress. But she also praised me if she was pleased with my work. She was so happy when I would “repair TV” (which meant turn on cable TV), replaced a light bulb, call maintenance or shop for her favourite food.
I remember one time her dentures didn't fit her anymore and they couldn't be fixed. She got new ones and she wasn't happy with them. She told me, "you can do everything. But why can't you fix my teeth?” I thought her question was quite funny.
3. How has Seniors for Seniors benefited your clients?
Seniors are a very vulnerable demographic within our population. Offering support to our elderly clients is vital in ensuring they live a lifestyle to which they have become accustomed. Seniors for Seniors does a great job in matching clients with compatible caregivers. Compatibility is important in building trust with our clients. The seniors we work with might have changing schedules and often require care unexpectedly. Flexibility is an important aspect in the Seniors for Seniors approach to providing care.
4. How has being a Senior Companion enriched your life?
I have found a sense of fulfilment and accomplishment in my work as a Senior Companion. I enjoy listening to the stories of my clients. Stories from their youth, them talking about their children, grandchildren or how and why they loved their job. It has happened to me a few times now that I learned something that I didn't understand from my parents' lives, especially why they acted a certain way. My clients have made me a more introspective and well-rounded person.
